Last week we updated that Minister of Defence and Alternate Prime Minister Benny Gantz\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/emekshaveh.org\/en\/defense-minister-construction-tomb-of-the-patriarchs\/\">announced<\/a>\u00a0he is working to expedite the construction of a lift for disabled visitors at the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron. The speed of the process clearly demonstrates the political motivations underlying the plan\u00a0and that\u00a0Gantz is eager to please the settlers\u00a0and Ultra Orthodox Jews who have been pushing for the lift for more almost twenty years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two objections have been submitted to the plan \u2013 one\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/emekshaveh.org\/en\/tomb-of-the-patriarchs-elevator\/\">by Emek Shaveh<\/a>\u00a0and one by the Municipality of Hebron.\u00a0 We\u00a0claim that the plan is informed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/emekshaveh.org\/en\/humanitarianism-hebron-style\/\">more by political than humanitarian<\/a>\u00a0considerations\u00a0and marks a breach of the status quo in Hebron.\u00a0In our objection we argued that\u00a0the plan was illegally approved\u00a0by a transitional government;\u00a0 that\u00a0the plan is in contravention of international agreements to which Israel is a signatory;\u00a0 that the plan is injurous to\u00a0the character of the ancient structure;\u00a0 that no documentation and preservation file has been submitted with the plan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The lift and access route will not make the site accessible to Muslim worshippers.
